Birthstone for March, aquamarine is part of the Beryl family which includes emeralds. The name aquamarine means ‘Water of the Sea’ and refers to its blue-green colour. In ancient times, aquamarine was believed to be the treasure of mermaids. Sailors used the stone as a talisman to bring good luck on the open waters. The gem was used as a symbol of protection and fearlessness too. The best gem quality aquamarine is from Brazil and a sky blue or dark blue colour is the most desirable. Spiritually, aquamarine is associated with trusting and letting go.
