Biggest pink diamond ever sold at auction in May 2012

Fetching over $17m at Christies.

The biggest pink diamond has recently been sold at auction fetching over $17m.

The Martian Pink, 12.04-carat pink diamond – the largest ever to hit the auction market – sold for over double its original estimate when it went under the hammer for $17.4m (£11.1m) through auction house Christie’s.

It is reported that the incredibly rare gem, is one of only two pink diamonds in the world which are said to be of ‘significant size’, along with a 23.60-carat Williamson Pink diamond, which was presented to Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding gift.
