Wonders of Nature: Natural shapes from the depths of the Earth…

The gemstones that we all love and covet are gifts that the earth has given us created over millions of years, and although naturally formed, sometimes they throw up delightful surprises…

Here’s an amazing dolphin-shaped amethyst geode that was recently discovered in Tucson, Arizona, USA…

Amethyst is the purple variety of the mineral quartz, and is its most famous and valuable gem variety. Quartz also contains other gemstones such as citrine, rose quartz, and smoky quartz. The colour of amethyst is most often caused by iron impurities, though it can also be coloured by natural radiation exposure.

Geodes are found throughout the world, but the most concentrated areas are located in the deserts. Volcanic ash beds, or regions containing limestone, are common geode locations. There are many easily accessible geode collecting sites in the western United States, including in California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada.

Amethyst is a colourful gemstone which looks stunning on its own or with other complimentary gems.
