Christmas time is fast approaching now that December is here and our store windows reflect the colours of the season with displays designed to attract, entice and delight.

Outside and inside, we’re ready for Christmas with our stores a treasure-trove of beautiful jewellery gifts at prices to suit all budgets, starting from £40.

With the busy Christmas markets bustling in both Bath and Bristol, you’ll find a more relaxed atmosphere in our stores where our friendly staff awaits and a festive welcome is ready to greet you along with a crackling fire and complimentary drinks and nibbles.

Nicholas’ tip for more relaxed shopping:

Due to its popularity, Bath Christmas Market  can get a little congested at times and it’s a good tip to know that the market is generally less crowded after 5.00pm when all of the coaches have departed, or early mornings between 9am-11am, before the crowds gather.

So why not come and see us around 11am, after you have visited the market, for a complimentary tea or coffee, or later at 4pm, before you go to the market, for a glass of mulled wine and a seasonal biscuit, then you will be nicely warmed up and ready to browse and soak up the atmosphere of the market which is open daily until 8.30pm.

Away from the earlier hustle and bustle of the market, you’ll find us just a short stroll away – opposite the Guildhall and down Northumberland Place, home to Nicholas Wylde Bath and our emporium of fabulous treasures.

We’re also open Sundays (11am-4pm) all throughout December before the big day for extra shopping time and a chance for you to soak up the Christmas ambience in town without the larger crowds present. Our Clifton shop has two dedicated parking spaces exclusively for clients, where you can book the space in advance and, following a visit to our store, can explore the other festive delights Clifton has to offer.
Our collections of unique jewellery offer all the choice you’ll need for everyone on your Christmas shopping list, with each item guaranteed to make the season shine brightly and provide a gift they will cherish forever.

These include our new collection ‘Carousel’, our festive-themed collection ‘Dazzle’ and a great selection of Silver and Pearl items that are sure to delight.
All purchases can be beautifully gift-wrapped at no extra cost.

Events: ‘Colourful World of Sapphire’ talks were a sparkling success!
Our recent talks on sapphires in both our Bath and Bristol stores were a resounding success with over 200 people attending to listen, see a stunning display of rare gems of every size and colour and enjoy complimentary drinks and nibbles.

Nicholas gave entertaining and informative talks on sapphires – about their origin, history and folklore, what to watch out for when buying good quality sapphires and other general information.

Our talks are a great way of us giving something back to our valued clients and at the same time providing fascinating insights into our world of precious gemstones.

Nicholas said: “I thank everyone who attended these free popular events where I hope they enjoyed our display of amazing, rare stones of every colour and learnt something interesting about sapphires through my talks.

We officially launched our new collection ‘Carousel’ during the events, using stunning sapphires to wonderful effect, and I look forward to hosting similar events in both Bath and Bristol stores in 2017
The next talk planned may be about the wonders of pearls, which is very fitting as pearl celebrates a 30th anniversary and next year Nicholas himself celebrates such a milestone – 30 years in business! We have many exciting plans afoot to mark this special occasion in 2017 so stay tuned.

We are open for suggestions for topics for future talks. Let us know what you would like to learn about from the fascinating world of gemstones and jewellery and how we can make these events even better. Contact to register your interest.
And the winner is......!

Following our incredibly popular sapphire events held in both Bath and Bristol stores recently, we have found a winner for our sapphire competition.

We had over 250 entries for the competition to win a stunning sapphire gemstone and even choose the colour and the lucky entrant drawn from the hat was Matthew who came in with his wife Amanda to talk to Nicholas about designing a dress ring to complement existing jewellery using the prize sapphire.
Matthew was delighted to have won the competition and treat his wife this way – just in time for Christmas - and now the only thing to decide upon is the colour of the gemstone.

The selection has been narrowed down to three colours: pink, purple and blue, the ring design has been discussed and drawn out by Nicholas so the lucky couple has gone away to talk colour choice before making their final decision.

Matthew commented: “Amanda and I were delighted to have won such a lovely prize. Nicholas accurately assessed Amanda's jewellery style and sketched some fantastic ring designs. Leaving us with one, well two, dilemmas; which of the three beautiful yet very different sapphires to choose and which of the three fantastic designs from the ever creative and talented Nicholas Wylde to set it in! Thank you...!

Congratulations to them both for winning such a fabulous prize.
Over in Bath: Nicholas awarded for ‘above & beyond’ work for Business Against Poverty

Business Against Poverty held their annual ball recently at Bailbrook House, Bath  where all members gathered to reflect on the year just gone and set new challenges for each member to find new business’ to join the good work over the coming new year. The event raised over £15,000 for charitable causes.

The fund-raising event also recognised contributions from members over the year and Nicholas was stunned and delighted to receive the award for ‘Business Member of the Year’ in recognition for his ‘outstanding contribution to charity’.

Business against Poverty is a Business Enterprise that drives profitable, ethical and sustainable growth for the benefit of its members and society.  Its funds drive the humanitarian work of the charity People against Poverty.

CEO Val Huxley commented: “With so many generous members it was a hard call, but Nicholas’ support this year has been above and beyond and we were delighted to be able to celebrate everything that he and his team do to support our work.

Nicholas said: “I am immensely proud to receive this award and be of some contribution to the wonderful work Business Against Poverty does.

For the fund-raising event, Nicholas donated a stunning 18ct freshwater pearl & diamond pendant (value £950) for the cause. The pendant was auctioned off to raise funds for Business Against Poverty and was won by delighted couple Graham and Jane- and just in time for Jane’s birthday!
Nicholas would like to send the call out about this wonderful local charity and urge others to join him in supporting it. As an individual, just £20 a month would make such a difference to a child’s life and as a business member; you can become a Silver, Gold or Platinum member for as little as £100 a month.

Client Story: Colourful ring reflects family love
One of the elements we really love here at Nicholas Wylde is creating unique bespoke items for clients infused with their individual stories and invested with both creativity and love.

Such an item was recently commissioned by Rosemary Swanborough - a ring originally intended as a tribute to her beloved Mother who passed away in April this year but eventually becoming a tribute to Rosemary’s whole family, with each member being represented by their birthstone.

We created a multi gemstone seven stone flower ring consisting of a central diamond and surrounded by colourful gemstones, all in 18ct rose gold rubover settings and mounted on a 18ct rose gold shank, after lengthy talks between Rosemary and India, one of our highly-skilled jewellery designers.
Rosemary takes up the story from there:

I went to Nicholas Wylde with my mind full of a collection of coloured birthstones, none of which went together; in the hope someone could make sense of my sentiment. I was introduced to the lovely Jewellery Designer India Mee, who put me at ease with a cup of tea and said "I like lots of colours" and retrieved her crayons from the drawer to start designing.

She asked me who was being represented and their birthstones and we made a list: citrine for my Mum, aquamarine for my Dad and ruby for my son.

India made some alternative suggestions for other members of my family,  we chose a deep green garnet known as a uvarovite  for my sister and a purple sapphire instead of the traditional blue for my daughter.

My Husband's birthstone was pearl - not really becoming of him - so I chose a black diamond as he has bought me black diamond earrings and a black diamond ring (from Nicholas Wylde) in the past  which would complement the shining white diamond representing myself.

We had the colours - but what about a design? I do not have an artistic streak within me but once again India came to the rescue. She brought out rings for me to try on to see what kind of design I would like.

We chose a very simple flower design in yellow gold with me in the centre and my family being
represented by the surrounding coloured petals.
Finally we had the design. A few weeks later I went to pick up my ring - I gasped as to how pretty it was, just perfect.

It's a shame neither of my parents are alive to see it but I will treasure it always and will pass my ring down to my family along with its story so we can all be remembered together in this unique and exquisite piece of jewellery. My heartfelt thanks to India and Nicholas Wylde for creating this.

That’s the ‘Wylde Effect’ at work, designing beautiful items of jewellery destined to be cherished forever.

Jewellery World News: Rare sapphire heads up London auction

An extremely rare 14 carat Kashmir sapphire is set to headline Bonhams’ Fine Jewellery auction in London this month.

The Kashmir sapphire single-stone ring, weighing 14.3-carats, is cushion-shaped with no indications of heating and has been estimated to sell for between £600,000 and £800,000.

Jean Ghika, head of jewellery at Bonhams UK and Europe, said Kashmir sapphires are amongst the “most highly prized gems for serious collectors”. “The mines, located high in the Himalayan mountain range in north west India, were only open for a period of approximately 30 years from the late 1880s onwards. Supplies were soon exhausted, making an example of this size a very rare specimen,” she said.

December birthstone: Turquoise
For those of you born in the month of December, turquoise is your birthstone.

One of the very first gemstones ever to be mined, turquoise has been long desired for its intense colour, ranging from green to sky-blue.

This colour variation depends on the quantities of iron and copper present and the most prized of all is the sky-blue turquoise from Iran.

Turquoise was introduced from Persia through Turkey. It was the national gemstone of Persia and believed to bring good luck to the wearer if the New Moon was reflected on a piece. It was also thought to be able to warn the wearer of a coming illness or danger by changing colour.

Turquoise is one of the earliest known stones to be used in jewellery. Pharaohs of early Egypt wore them and a tomb excavated in 1900 contained the mummified remains of Queen Zer, who ruled in 5500 B.C - found on her arm were four magnificent turquoise bracelets. Beads dating back to 5000 B.C. have been found in Mesopotamia (now Iraq).

There are many superstitions associated with turquoise. In the Third century, it was believed to protect its owner from falling off a horse. A change in colour revealed the infidelity of a wife. Twelfth century Arabian writings said “The turquoise shines when the air is pure and becomes pale when it is dim.”

They also believed that its colour changed with the weather, becoming the bluest hue when the sky was clear.
