Wylde & Wonderful commissions: Silver Unicorn weaves its magic and golden yacht sets sail!
Unicorn final version realised in solid silver

We love the challenges our clients set for us to create something particularly unique and highly personal to them.

Bespoke creations are what we specialise in here at Nicholas Wylde, creating something amazing from pure imagination into precious metals and gems.

This creates items of jewellery that are highly personal, totally unique and infused with the client’s personality as well as the ‘Wylde Effect’!

During the recent Christmas period, we created many such commissions and here are details of just two of them...

Jewellery designer Giovanna creating the Unicorn in our Clifton workshop

Our ever-popular ‘Wild’ Collection of animal pendants in silver and gold have often inspired clients to add their own commissioned choice and the first story tells how one client fulfilled a wish for their daughter:

Vicky said: “In Christmas 2016 I asked my adult daughter what she wanted and she couldn’t think of anything so, in exasperation, she said she wanted a Unicorn!

In response, I wrote a poem saying I couldn’t find one and suggested instead adopting a rhinoceros saying that, after all, they are unicorns – just fat, grey and wrinkly ones! It became a family joke.
This last Christmas, I was walking past Nicholas Wylde’s Bath shop and saw the silver pendant animals in the window. On a whim, I went in to ask if the collection included a Unicorn.

India, a lovely young lady who designs jewellery at Nicholas Wylde, said no but one could be made. India drew me a design to approve, which I did, and the Unicorn pendant was commissioned.

I was very pleased with the design when it came to life and my daughter loved it, particularly as it was a real surprise. I wrote another poem to go with it, this time describing Father Christmas’ journey to find the Unicorn.

I enjoyed the whole process of commissioning a bespoke piece, which was a new experience for me, and felt everyone at Nicholas Wylde entered into the whole spirit of it. The design is lovely with a modern twist!

Mr & Mrs Warren decided on a nautical theme for their commission resulting in a multi-gemstone pendant consisting of 18ct yellow gold yacht design partly edged in white gold with two brilliant cut diamonds and a ruby in 18ct white gold rubover settings and a 18ct white gold base depicting waves with sapphires in grain settings.

They were both delighted with the final result and Mrs Warren commented: “I was very impressed when we walked in with a picture of a piece we found on the internet as Brano started to draw to scale in front of us and worked out a price for the piece on the spot. The yacht turned out much nicer.

Client Story: Superfit™ design ring brings super-delight for special birthday!
A hinged ring that clips onto the finger

We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to ensure that everyone can wear and enjoy our jewellery and a recent commission for a client is a wonderful example of this.

The client, Ian, takes up the story from here: “My wife’s special birthday was fast approaching and she had dropped hints that she would like to find a special piece of jewellery to mark the occasion.  We live close to Exeter and had searched the local area with no success and seemed to come away with more questions than answers - not a great start!

We were due to go up to Bath and I took the chance to do a few searches on the internet and came across Nicholas Wylde who looked to have some very interesting pieces on their website and also undertook bespoke assignments.

I have to say that we both loved the process of designing the ring and found it fascinating.  Nicholas is very relaxed but gets a lot of information about what you do and do not like.  There had been a bangle in the bespoke section of their website which we both liked and this became the loose
base for our design.  Amazingly, he only had to draw it out twice and we had exactly what we wanted.

My wife suffers from arthritis in the finger that the ring was to be worn on.  We had been somewhat disappointed as regards the suggestions for overcoming this in other shops, which really were inelegant solutions.  This problem had been taken on board by Nicholas and he told us about the “Superfit™” ring which would overcome the problem.  It may be an expensive solution but it is also a very clever, unobtrusive solution and worth every penny.

The jewellery was absolutely stunning and will be worn with pride on every possible occasion.  We are so lucky to have found such a talented designer, whose designs can be transformed by his team into such beautiful jewellery pieces.  The bad news for me is that my wife is planning a return visit!

Superfit™ is a unique hinged ring mechanism which opens and closes without having to be pushed over the knuckle – ensuring that beautiful rings can be worn for a lifetime, instead of being hidden away in a jewellery box when they become too loose or tight to wear. If this is something you are interested in, why not book an appointment with a member of the Nicholas Wylde team on 01225 462826, or alternatively, you can book an appointment via our website.

February birthstone: Amethyst
For those born in the romantically inclined month of February, amethyst is your birthstone - associated with spirituality, wisdom, sobriety and, of course, with Saint Valentine’s Day.

Amethysts contain the second most abundant mineral found in Earth’s crust – quartz. Like quartz, amethysts are a transparent form of silicon dioxide and an amethyst’s colour can range from a faint mauve to a rich purple. Main commercial sources of amethyst are Brazil and Uruguay but also found in Arizona and the North Carolina region of North America.

Amethyst has a rich history of lore and legend. It can be traced back as far as 25,000 years in France, where it was used as a decorative stone by prehistoric humans.

It’s said that the signet ring worn by Cleopatra was an amethyst, engraved with the figure of Mithras, a Persian deity symbolizing the Divine Idea, Source of Light and Life.

More famously, amethyst is also recorded as the stone of Saint Valentine, who wore an amethyst engraved with the figure of his assistant, Cupid. Saint Valentine’s Day is still observed in February across the world. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word “amethystos” meaning “not drunk,” and was believed to prevent its wearers from intoxication.

February’s birthstone, the amethyst, was the stone of royalty, representing power. And the greatest power of all, love, we celebrate this and every month at Nicholas Wylde.

Competition Time: Take our ‘Look Back to 1987’ quiz & win a £30 off Wylde voucher!
We had our usual great response to our ‘Match the Celebrity’ competition in last month’s newsletter but this month we’re changing things a little...
The correct answers from last month are:

     1.    Catherine Zeta-Jones
     2.    Jennifer Lopez (or ‘JLo’)

Congratulations to Ann Heming, our winner this month pulled from the hat, who wins a £25 Wylde Voucher. Well done on identifying the correct answers.

As it’s our 30th anniversary year, the voucher prize value has risen to £30 this month and we will return to celebrity jewellery in future competitions.

But for the next few newsletter editions, we will be kicking off our 30th anniversary celebrations by looking back at the year 1987, testing your memory and/or ability to research. All questions are in two parts so take a look and good luck!
1.    Which former soap star made their debut as a recording artist in 1987 and what was the title of their
        first single?
2.    Which veteran US animated series made its debut in this year and in whose television show?

3.    In 1987, Britain was caught out by a Great Storm which caused great havoc and widespread damage with winds raging up to 120mph. Which month did the storm take place? And which BBC weatherman famously failed to forecast the severity of the storm commenting: “Earlier on today, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way; well, if you’re watching, don’t worry, there isn’t”?

Send your answers to david.currie@nicholaswylde.com and the draw will be held on February 20th to select the winning entry that wins the £30 off Wylde voucher. Good luck!
