But of course, selecting that all-important ring is a highly personal thing – especially the gemstones that adorn it!

While diamonds are a perennial favourite with a timeless quality, three stone engagement rings are very much on-trend this year (due, in no small part, by the three stone ring seen in the recent engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.) These can be three diamonds –as with Meghan’s ring - or two diamonds with a central coloured gem, or any combination thereof.

And it’s not just colour that might help to determine choice – all gemstones come with a fascinating history of fact and folklore and some attributes that reflect zodiac signs or the personality of individuals.

Origin of Valentine’s Day: 
Who was St Valentine and how did the traditions begin? 

The day gets its name from a famous saint, but there are several stories of who he was. The popular belief about St Valentine is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD.

Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret.
