Top Story: New Year brings 30th Wylde Anniversary! Celebrating three decades of award-winning service & creative excellence
Thirty years is a long time, especially in business. That’s why we’re very proud to be celebrating our 30th anniversary in 2017!

That’s three decades of the ‘Wylde Effect’ and over that time, we’ve always strived to make new innovations, refine the brand and ensure that the name Nicholas Wylde is synonymous with high quality, second-to-none service and creative excellence.

Nicholas originally trained as a jewellery designer / goldsmith at the prestigious Birmingham School of Jewellery. As a young man, he perfected his craft in the workshops of local jewellers before realising his ultimate dream, at the age of 24 in 1987, of opening his own branded store in the historic and beautiful city of Bath, with initially just 12 rings in the shop window!

Portrait of a young man: Nicholas in his first shop in 1987
Originally, the shop was at 13 Northumberland Place but the Wylde Effect quickly grew and Nicholas needed to expand. By 1995 he had moved to larger premises next door at number 12 Northumberland Place, where the flag-ship store remains and flourishes today.

Nicholas infused all his passion and skill into designing and creating original jewellery while his sister Corrinda managed the store. His aim has always been to design and make jewellery which is not easily available on the market and his special collections reflect the abundance of ideas and influences he has.

His creative talent and consummate customer care have ensured the Wylde Brand has blossomed over the 30 years to become an internationally recognised and respected name in bespoke jewellery. Nicholas has created jewellery for famous TV and sports personalities as well as members of the Royal Family.

In 2010, Nicholas opened his second shop in Clifton, Bristol. Described as Bristol’s most exclusive suburb and close to the city’s famous suspension bridge, this Georgian quarter is home to many up market and independent specialist shops.
To mark his 25th anniversary in 2012, Nicholas launched his unique, registered and patented Wylde Flower Diamond® placing him among the top diamond designers in the world with a unique cut.
In 2015, Nicholas’ website received a complete redesign and overhaul and was re-launched towards the end of the year in its present, cutting-edge, user-friendly form across all devices – offering the same quality service and easy shopping 24/7.

This drive to maintain high standards and explore new creative areas will be further demonstrated in 2017, as Nicholas celebrates his 30th Anniversary with dynamic new projects and events.
Watch out for exciting announcements very soon as we enter our 30th year!
That was the year that was: Wylde highlights of 2016
As a new year begins, it’s natural to look back over the one just gone to take stock and recall its golden moments. 2016 was certainly a Wylde and wonderful year which saw many highlights for us all here at Nicholas Wylde.

From collaborations with famous fashion designers, hugely popular in-store events to new collections and new staff faces taking centre stage, here’s just some of our top moments of 2016...
1. Zandra Rhodes goes Wylde for Bath in Fashion charity auction
Zandra Rhodes and Nicholas in our Bath store and the stunning collaborative pendant designed for charity

In April 2016, Nicholas teamed-up with iconic fashion designer Dame Zandra Rhodes to design together a stunning one-off pendant, crafted in silver, 9ct rose gold, pink sapphires and diamonds, with a value of £2,000.

The collectors’ item – engraved with Zandra’s signature – was first shown at Bath in Fashion 2016 and was raffled off and all proceeds from ticket sales went to support three charities: People Against Poverty; RUH Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now.

Nicholas, who is always looking for fresh challenges and innovations, said: “This was an amazing opportunity to work with an incredible, vibrant designer in fashion and it proved to be one of the high-lights of our Grand Finale Designer Fashion show for Bath in Fashion 2016.”

In fact, the collaboration was such a success and a perfect fusion of both designers’ styles, there’s every chance the pair may reunite at some stage for another project together. Watch this space!
2. ‘Carousel’ Collection spins out and new ‘Wild’ characters added!
We launched a brand new collection in 2016 and it proved a very popular addition. ‘Carousel’ uses only the finest, brightly-coloured sapphires, set in circular designs of white and yellow gold to create a distinctly striking collection of rings, earrings and pendants that complement each other perfectly.

One of our top-selling collections of 2016, you can view ‘Carousel’ here.
Our ‘Wild’ Collection of exquisitely-rendered animal motif design silver and gold pendants has long been one of our best-selling and loved jewellery choices.

In 2016, we added three more characters to the collection, which proved equally as popular as the existing range of Duck, Hare, Sea Lion and Puffin.
By expanding the collection to include ‘Butterfly’. ‘Dolphin’ and ‘Cat’, we made our ‘Wild’ animal kingdom bigger and better and it served as a great reminder that at Nicholas Wylde, we can create almost anything from precious metals and gemstones.

So, if there’s a ‘Wild’ character not represented in the collection that you’d like, why not talk to us today with your ideas for a unique bespoke creation – just for you or a loved one!

3. 300th Wylde Flower Diamond® created
Nicholas was delighted to design and make this fabulous pendant at the start of 2016 which saw the 300th Wylde Flower Diamond® made and sold. What a great way to start the year!

The brief was to design a pendant that could be worn throughout the day and which would also look fantastic when worn for a special occasion.

The client chose a design that Nicholas also believed would work best and the final result is truly stunning and looks fabulous. Nicholas welcomed Mrs Maclagan into the Wylde Flower family and looks forward to welcoming future clients who appreciate the beauty of this amazing and unique gem.

‘Colourful World of Sapphire’ Talks

In November, we held talks on sapphires in both our Bath and Bristol stores which were a resounding success with over 200 people attending to listen, see a stunning display of rare gems of every size and colour and enjoy complimentary drinks and nibbles.

Nicholas gave entertaining and informative talks on sapphires – their origin, history and folklore, what to watch out for when buying good quality sapphires and other general information.

Our talks are a great way of us giving something back to our valued clients and at the same time providing fascinating insights into our world of precious gemstones.

Over in Bath: ‘Wylde Gems of the Xmas Market’ Awards helps spotlight indie traders
We love the Bath Christmas Market that took place last month and also love to support independent traders, which is why this year we awarded recommendations to 10 selected stalls to help them get the spotlight they deserve and stand out from the crowd.

These ‘Wylde Gems of the Market’ recommendations was announced and promoted across all Nicholas Wylde social media platforms over the entire course of the market in December offering extra well-deserved exposure for the selected traders. All 10 ‘Gem’ traders also shared every item we posted to their own followers and by doing so supported all the other traders in the group.

As an independent retailer ourselves – celebrating 30 years in business in 2017-  we value these indie traders, helping to keep our high streets alive, open and thriving and we wish them all a happy and prosperous New Year.

Congratulations to them all on their ‘Wylde Gem’ awards!

Client Story: Tanzanite & diamond stunner!
Creating highly personalised items of jewellery and seeing how the ‘Wylde Effect’ weaves its charm on our valued clients is one of the most enjoyable aspects of our work.

We created a tanzanite and diamond dress ring consisting of a stunningly colourful principal tanzanite, weighing 14.08ct and especially sourced by Nicholas during his yearly buying trip to Hong Kong for the commission.

The tanzanite is in an 18ct white gold 4-claw setting surrounded by diamonds in grain settings with diamonds encrusted into the collet sides and shoulders.

There is a story behind the creation of this gorgeous ring as the client remembers:  “Nicholas has made me some stunning pieces of jewellery over the years. We share a passion for amazing jewellery using diamonds and quality gemstones.

While on holiday in South Africa, I spotted a lovely tanzanite ring and, knowing Nicholas was on his Hong Kong buying trip, I sent a cheeky email with a photo of the ring I saw.
He replied “It looks beautiful but I can surely make a better ring at a better price!”And, sure enough, he did!
Nicholas sourced the tanzanite stone the next day and created this stunning ring on his return to Bath, which I received on my birthday.”

Nicholas commented: “Working with clients using wonderful gemstones and creating stunning pieces of jewellery is exactly what I’m about and why it’s been a joy for me to be doing this for the past thirty years.”

January birthstone: Garnet
For those born in the first month of the year, garnet is your birthstone.

The name “garnet” is derived from the Latin “granatum” meaning “pomegranate” because the crystals resemble the red colour and seed-like form of this fruit. In fact, garnets come in all kinds of colours such as black, many shades of green and they can even be colourless. This variation in colour comes from metals such as manganese, iron, calcium, and aluminium. Green garnets are most highly prized as they are very rare, as are the colourless stones.

Garnets are commonly found as small pebbles in streams, where the igneous and metamorphic rocks that contain them have weathered away. They’re found in many places around the world, including North and South America, Australia, India, Asia and Spain.

Ancient warriors believed that garnets brought victory. The Crusaders used them as protection against wounds and accidents during their journeys.  In Medieval times, it protected its wearer against poisons, wounds and bad dreams, and cured depression. Red garnets relieved fever, haemorrhages and inflammatory diseases.

In modern times, the garnet symbolizes a light heart, loyalty and enduring affection – all great qualities to have and take into a brand new year.

Competition Time: Match the sparklers to the celebrity & win a £25 off Wylde voucher!
We had a massive response to our competition in last month’s newsletter.  As it was our festive edition the prize was a bottle of Nicholas’ own branded champagne and many readers entered the chase!

The correct answers from last month’s newsletter are:

     1.    Angelina Jollie
     2.    Beyonce

Congratulations to Beryl Ray who was the winner drawn from the proverbial hat with the correct answers. Mrs Ray picked up the bottle of bubbly just in time to make Christmas a little more special.

We’re back to celebrity rings this month, so take a look and the best of luck!
1.    Here’s a lady, originally from Wales, who married into a great Hollywood family dynasty. In fact, her father-in-law recently celebrated his 100th birthday!
2.    This celebrated singer/actress was once listed by Time magazine as one of the most influential Hispanic performers in the USA and her fame has gained her a net worth of over $320 million!

Send your answers to and the draw will be held on January 18th to select the winning entry that wins the £25 off Wylde voucher. Good luck!
