Christmas shopping made easy – Nicholas’ top tips to avoid the crowds...
The run-up to Christmas can get very frantic, and of course the incredibly popular Bath Christmas Market opens on the 24th of November which always brings in the thronging crowds.
But shopping can be easy at Nicholas Wylde and here are our top tips to help make that happen...
1.    Sunday Shopping
From November 20th and right up until Christmas, both Bath and Bristol branches of Nicholas Wylde are open on Sundays from 11am-4pm to allow for extra shopping time where you can soak up the festive atmosphere but avoid the bigger crowds.  Join us for complimentary festive drinks and nibbles as you get toasty with our crackling fires in our Bath store and avail yourself of our two dedicated parking spaces exclusively for clients in our Clifton store.

Sunday shopping in Bath will allow you to soak up the atmosphere of this World Heritage city, while our parking spaces in Clifton (booking in advance advised) allows you to explore the other delights the fashionable shopping area has to offer.
2.    Beating the Market Crowds

While it’s true that the Bath Christmas Market can make the streets quite congested, this is during the ‘coaching-in’ hours of 11am-4pm – but you’ll find shopping a much more relaxed experience if you visit during the early morning (9-11am) or early evening (6-9pm), when the majority of the coaches have left.

The Bath Christmas market has new surprises each year, with new stalls and all the elements that make you feel ‘it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ and Nicholas always finds some great gift ideas at the market.

Bristol, of course, has its own popular Christmas Market, held each year in Broadmead Shopping Centre. And for those who don’t want to tackle the roads, don’t forget that both cities have great Park & Ride services, so let the buses take the strain!

Over in Bath: Welcome India to Bath staff, joining our team of three Jewellery Designers ready to bring your ideas to life...
It’s welcome aboard to India, who has officially joined the staff at Nicholas Wylde Bath as one of our highly skilled Jewellery Designers.

India will be bringing all her creative talents to her new role to help make clients’ dreams become realities, with sumptuous jewellery items, designed the distinctive Wylde way.

India comments: “I have always loved making things, drawing and being creative, so when I was 18 I moved to London to study a degree in jewellery and accessories. I fell in love with it and knew instantly it was the industry I wanted to work in. I spent the 3rd year of my degree on placement working for jewellers in Frome, improving and learning new making skills in the workshop, I then went back to London for my 4th and final year where I designed and made my final collection.

I am now over the moon to be working in Bath as a jewellery designer for Nicholas Wylde - it’s a wonderful city and I’m so glad to be back in the area. I love that I meet new people every day to design bespoke jewellery for them and re-designing their unworn jewellery, so it then becomes a unique and special item once again.

Jewellery is so personal and sentimental to people which
is what makes it so special. I feel lucky to be part of such a lovely team here at Nicholas Wylde.”

Nicholas said: “It’s been wonderful welcoming India to our team and she has already settled in, designing some fabulous jewellery for clients and receiving some amazing feedback. I very much look forward to seeing what India will create for our valued clients over the coming Christmas period.”
Client Story: Designed for eternity
One happy couple recently received the ‘Wylde Effect’ in a gorgeous bespoke creation that combined the materials and love invested in previous rings into one stunning new statement piece.

Incorporating an engagement ring and wedding band, by using the diamonds from the engagement ring and the yellow gold from the wedding ring, we created a brand new ring designed for eternity for Mrs Hayley Dickinson.

A diamond multi-stone ring consisting of diamonds grain set across a middle wave shape section alongside a matching narrow yellow gold shaped band with outer edges of white gold both with a single diamond flush set at either side.

We wish them all the very best for the future.
Jewellery World News: Raider of the lost topaz!

The world’s biggest chunk of cut blue topaz gemstone has been unveiled 30 years after it was discovered by a swashbuckling British adventurer likened to Indiana Jones.

Max Ostro escaped death at the hands of the Nazis, braved malaria, and avoided piranha fish in his quest to find beautiful gems. The stunning 9,381 carat stone is currently on show in the National History Museum, so experts are unable to give an idea of its value because of insurance reasons.

However specialists have said the 2kg gem, about the size of a rugby ball, is certainly “worth millions” and is “essentially priceless”.

Ostro discovered the flawless blue stone in its natural form deep in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil in the mid 1980s. The sparkling gem has been locked away in the Ostro family’s vaults ever since.

When Max passed away six years ago, his entrepreneur and philanthropist son Maurice Ostro OBE decided to use the family business to help in his charitable work. The dazzling stone went on permanent show at the Natural History Museum’s minerals gallery from October 19.

Topaz is one of the birthstones for November and you can find out more about this colourful gem in the next story and how we have used Blue topaz in our new jewellery collection ‘Carousel’...

November birthstone: Topaz & Citrine
For those of you born in the month of November, topaz (left) and citrine are your birthstones.

The name topaz derives from a Sanskrit word meaning ‘fire’ and, legend has it, can be used to control heat and as medication to cure fever.

Topaz occurs in a range of glorious colours – blue, pale green, shades of yellow, pink, red, brown and even black.

The gemstone, with its beautiful colours, lively fire, clarity and hardness, is ideal for jewellery and pure topaz - when brilliantly cut - can often be mistaken for diamond. Topaz is an expensive gem, due to its rarity and the rarest colour of all, and subsequently the most valuable, is red.

The gem is found in Russia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Germany, Norway, Pakistan, Brazil and the United States.

Citrine is yellow quartz with a hardness of 7. The yellow colour is due to the presence of iron oxide and natural citrine is pale yellow in colour but very rare.

The most common citrine is heat treated amethyst but it can also be made from smokey quartz. The gem occurs in the same areas as amethyst with the best quality citrine found in Russia, India, France, Brazil and Spain.

Citrine is often called ‘the stone of the mind’ and considered an aid in that department. The name is derived from Latin, meaning ‘yellow’ and is also the origin of the word ‘citron’.

Competition Time: Match the sparklers to the celebrity & win a £25 off Wylde voucher!
Once again, we had a wonderful response to our competition in last month’s newsletter. It seems many of you are enjoying the detective work involved in matching the cool rocks to the celebrity owner.
The correct answers from last month’s newsletter are:

1. Iman, widow of David Bowie
2. Meryl Streep
Congratulations to Diane Clapp who was the winner drawn from the proverbial hat with the correct answers. A £25 off Wylde voucher will be on its way to you very soon with our best compliments.
November Competition
We’re back to celebrity rings this month, so take a look and the best of luck!
1.    Here’s a large diamond ring that was in the news recently, but for less than glamorous reasons. If you want to see the item today, the celebrity in question won’t be able to provide any more photos and no-one knows where the ‘Pink Panther’ is to answer any other questions!
2.    At the start of 2016, this powerhouse diva revealed this simply stunning 35 carat diamond engagement ring and it remains one of the brightest rocks of the year – proving that she doesn’t ‘want a lot for Christmas’!

Send your answers to and the draw will be held on November 28th to select the winning entry that wins the £25 off Wylde voucher.
And finally: Indie shops - reasons to support your local traders this Christmas
There are many reasons why it makes sense to support independent retailers and the cities of Bath and Bristol are perfect examples of this.

Bath is full of indie retailers, cafes and hotels that all offer vast choices and warm welcomes. Some of Nicholas’ top suggestions include Moss of Bath, Channi B Shoes and for classically cool department shopping, you can’t beat Rossiters of Bath.

After all the shopping done, why not treat yourself to a night in some of Nicholas’ favourite hotels including The Royal Crescent HotelThe Bath Priory, The Abbey Hotel and The Gainsborough.

Clifton is a shopping area with indie retailers very well represented with many cafes, shops and no less than seven jewellery shops! (But only one has the ‘Wylde Effect!’)

Read on for more reasons to always shop indie...

1.    Boost your local economy

According to research via local authorities, around 63p out of every £1 you spend will stay in the local economy, rather than just 40p for larger corporations. High streets that have bustling shopping centres filled with local, independent stores also tend to have higher house prices in the surrounding area.

2.    Unique and quirky gifts

A lovely benefit of buying from small independent shops is that you’ll often come across gifts that you just can’t find anywhere else, rather than mass-produced offerings you’ll find in a lot of the major stores.

3.    A more personal service

Smaller retailers are also able to offer a more personal service, give you advice on products and even make recommendations. It’s the personal touch, and it makes all the difference during the festive season, when some of the larger chains can seem to take the soul right out of Christmas shopping.
