title ico Bath Christmas Market time is here
550 px image
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas when Bath’s Abbey is suddenly surrounded by wooden chalets (that’s 170 for those counting), full of traders offering a staggering array of festive delights to tempt the ever-growing tide of shoppers - from handcrafted toys and candles to a wide choice of festive eateries.

Yes, it’s Bath Christmas Market, running this year from November 26th until December 13th, bringing its unique atmosphere to the Georgian city.

It’s one of the UK’s most popular Christmas Markets, not least because of its picture-perfect setting, nestled between the Abbey and the Roman Baths, allowing shoppers to purchase their wares

Top Tip for the Market

Due to its popularity, it can get a little congested at times and it’s a good tip to know that the market is generally less crowded after 3.30pm when all of the coaches have departed.

Why not come and see us around 3pm for a complimentary glass of mulled wine and a seasonal biscuit, then you will be nicely warmed up and ready to browse and soak up the atmosphere of the market.

Away from the earlier hustle and bustle of the market, you’ll find us just a short stroll away – opposite the Guildhall and down Northumberland Place, home to Nicholas Wylde and our emporium of fabulous treasures.

title ico December’s birthstone: Turquoise
550 px image
"If cold December gave you birth
the month of snow and ice and mirth
Place on your hand a turquoise blue
Success will bless whate'er you do."

Those born in the winter month of December have for their birthstone, a long-adored gem known for its sky-reflecting qualities.

One of the very first gemstones to be mined, turquoise has been long desired for its intense colour, ranging from green to sky-blue.

This colour variation depends on the quantities of iron and copper present and the most prized of all is the sky-blue turquoise from Iran.

Turquoise was introduced from Persia through Turkey. It was the national gemstone of Persia and believed to bring good luck to the wearer if the New Moon was reflected on a piece. It was also thought to be able to warn the wearer of a coming illness or danger by changing colour.

Turquoise is one of the earliest known stones to be used in jewellery. Pharaohs of early Egypt wore them and a tomb excavated in 1900 contained the mummified remains of Queen Zer, who ruled in 5500 B.C - found on her arm were four magnificent turquoise bracelets. Beads dating back to 5000 B.C. have been found in Mesopotamia (now Iraq).

There are many superstitions associated with turquoise. In the Third century, it was believed to protect its owner from falling off a horse. A change in colour revealed the infidelity of a wife. Twelfth century Arabian writings said “The turquoise shines when the air is pure and becomes pale when it is dim.”

They also believed that its colour changed with the weather, becoming the bluest hue when the sky was clear.
